This will result in an impairment in their daytime functioning. In some people, this can be short-term, such as in anticipation of a stressful event like facing an exam or starting a new job. In others, this goes on for many months and years, causing distress to the patient.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients with insomnia will be evaluated using\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep diaries &#8211; These let you measure and record when the patient went to bed, when they woke up during the night and woke up in the morning<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actigraphy &#8211; It is a wearable sleep test that tracks the patient\u2019s movements while they are sleeping to analyse when they\u2019re asleep and awake<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polysomnography (sleep study) &#8211; It is a comprehensive test that records brain waves, oxygen level in blood, heart rate, breathing, leg movements, etc during the sleep study.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This condition&#8217;s management includes sleep hygiene measures, medication revision and cognitive behavioural therapy.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5308736 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5308736\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">Sleep-related Breathing Disorders<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c4db721 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c4db721\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These conditions are involved with abnormal and difficult respiration during sleep. This phenomenon is known as an apnoeic spell. Patients are evaluated with sleep studies called &#8216;polysomnography&#8217;, tests that evaluate sleep in detail and diagnose the underlying sleep disorder. The first line treatment is CPAP therapy (a device that provides continuous positive airway pressure). Additionally, weight loss with exercise and a healthy diet are also substantial.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4a9d480 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4a9d480\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">Central Disorders of Hypersomnolence<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c117e44 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c117e44\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are a rare group of sleep disorders where patients complain that they are always sleepy during the day and the night. Patients tend to fall asleep in the daytime even after adequate sleep. E.g. Narcolepsy. Some patients with excessive sleepiness may have an underlying undetected medical or psychiatric condition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive sleep has a significant detrimental impact on the patient&#8217;s life. These patients must be evaluated with sleep studies and blood investigations before starting their treatment.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-abe455e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"abe455e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">Circadian Rhythm Sleep-Wake Disorders<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cf4914c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cf4914c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders are a group of disorders where the patient&#8217;s body&#8217;s clock, which helps to maintain a regular day and night pattern, is affected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several types of circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders.<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delayed sleep-wake phase disorder<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where the patient does not fall asleep until the morning and tends to wake up in the afternoon \u2013 the patient&#8217;s circadian clock is delayed compared to the average population. These patients may struggle to wake up on time for school and work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advance sleep-wake phase disorder<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, this disorder tends to have an early sleep pattern and early rise pattern. There are various types of disorders. Shift workers also suffer from the detrimental effects of not sleeping on time and staying awake when they should be sleeping.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jet lag disorder\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is another condition in which people suffer due to crossing time zones.
